Bishop Joseph Shanahan Pilgrimage in Co. Tipperary

Holy Rosary Sisters at Mass with Parishioners at the Church of the Sacred Heart Borrisoleigh

The Bishop Joseph Shanahan Pilgrimage took place on 13 July 2024. The Holy Rosary Sisters set out from Mount St. Anne’s in Portarlington, the venue of their 16th General Chapter, and journeyed to Borrisoleigh in Co. Tipperary, Ireland, the birthplace of their founder, Bishop Joseph Shanahan.

Mass and Parish Welcome

The pilgrimage began with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Borrisoleigh. After the Mass, the parish hosted the Sisters with a warm reception in the parish centre. It was a joyful gathering of prayer, thanksgiving, and community spirit.

Visiting Shanahan’s Early Faith Roots

The group then visited the churches in Borrisoleigh and Templederry, where Bishop Shanahan received his sacraments as a child.

A highlight of the Bishop Joseph Shanahan Pilgrimage was the presence of two of his grandnephews, symbolising a living connection between past and present.

Honouring the Legacy of Bishop Shanahan

The Sisters also stopped at Shanahan’s grotto and viewed a plaque donated by students of Holy Rosary College, Edenvale, South Africa. These moments reminded everyone of his lasting influence and the faith that continues to inspire the Holy Rosary Sisters. The Bishop Joseph Shanahan Pilgrimage was a touching way to honour his legacy and renew the missionary spirit of the congregation.
