IFENDU THE LIGHT OF LIFE

“Working like an elephant and eating like a grasshopper!”  This is how the women of Neke in Isi-Uzo Local Government, Enugu State, Nigeria, described their lives before they joined Ifendu.
Ifendu means the Light of Life, and so it has been for the women and men of the area, as Sister Rose Uchem, the project director, explains.  She describes how Ifendu has brought increased social awareness and sense of empowerment to the women in rural communities. Addressing extreme poverty and gender-based oppression, by provision of social and language literacy skills, vocational and business skills training, as well as micro-credit, the project resulted in improved standards of living, enhanced self-esteem and improved levels of couple relationships.
